Pursuing creativity comes with many rewards

By Nora Sims

It can help one develop communication skills, as the creative process is a universal language of its own. A picture (sculpture, or any object) can indeed tell a story in a thousand words. One's creation will express oneself in ways that may be difficult to do through words alone. And it doesn’t have to be serious and heavy – creativity can be a form of play, too! It can help clear one's mind and provide an outlet for the beauty that one sees in the world.

The creative process is a great way to challenge oneself to take risks without facing severe consequences if things don’t go according to plan. If one doesn't like the "finished product" it can be changed, discarded or destroyed. The worst that can happen is one had the opportunity to learn what doesn't work. The best that can happen is the satisfaction that comes from creating a thing of beauty.

Creativity is also an excellent tool for problem-solving. It teaches one to think more holistically and outside the box. This is why many people turn to creative outlets such as music, writing, painting, or sculpting, to process emotions and experiences difficult to express through words alone. Like one's best friend, it gives one the freedom and space to explore one's talents and abilities, without passing judgment.

The results of the creative process are a way to document one's life and what one is feeling at any given moment. It exposes who we are as individuals. It is the transformation of something intangible to something of value not only to oneself but as a measurable gift to others. From this perspective, creativity becomes a way of telling your story and having it be heard long after completion, much like how the pictographs of early humans communicate with us today.

Whatever medium you choose, be it growing a vegetable garden, or sculpting, don't be afraid to call upon your creativity for help. Try it!

You never know what amazing things you might create!
